Genre? What's your story?

I was just wondering what genre, if any, you guys feel your work fits into. And how do you feelo about how "genre" fiction is treated as opposed to "literary" fiction?

I guess I would fit into some sort of spooky urban fantasy? Or erotic thriller? Or delusional ranting? Who knows!

I guess my work would fall into fantasy and urban fantasy.
I am okay with genres. I know that I tend to read the same genre most of the time. However, it is nice to pick up something totally unrelated just to remind myself that there are other things out there.

We fall into long quiet stretches here sometimes. Feel free to get a conversation started!

As for me, I have been SICK.

*zaps cyber chicken soup/warm blanket/hot toddy to Stacie*

I write science fiction in the New Wave tradition (social relevance, psychological issues, taboos, inner versus outer space). Speculative fiction works, too. A.K.A. the stuff that falls in the cracks.

"Genre" versus "literary" is subjective, IMHO. For example, Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake is science fiction, but it's usually shelved with mainstream fiction.

Been crazy-busy over here, too. I did a book signing at Barnes & Noble the beginning of March, was at the Aisling Press table at MegaCon this past weekend, and this coming weekend I'm a panelist at a Critique Retreat at one of our local libraries.

And I've learned that September 19 is the release date for Deviations: Appetite. *Grin*

Poetry's been accepted to We'Moon and to Space and Time. *GrinGrin*

An article's been accepted to Poets' Forum Magazine, which will also publish one of my photos on the cover. *GrinGrin*

I'm almost done drafting a story, but It Will Have To Wait until I wrestle my taxes into shape. *Growl*

        Feel better soon...

...starting a conversation... How about, what's the weirdest premise you've started a story from?
I wrote a short story years ago about a man fishing in the Mississippi River who discovers a talking (and surprisingly well-informed) coelocanth, and proceeds to discuss the state of US politics with this fish.
And yes, I was completely sober when I wrote it!

          Mindy, thanks -- and you're welcome! :)

Erica, I love the coelocanth premise! Very cool. Probably my weirdest story to date is "Prometheus Rebound" (forthcoming in the e-zine Helix, issue TBD), which begins with the Greek god Prometheus living in modern times and working as a live installation/body mutilation artist. And that's the least of his problems.
