How do you decide what you have on your hands? Is romance more formulaic? Erotica more edgy or perhaps less story driven?
I'm working on a piece that has a definite story, but also focuses on a sexual relationship between two people. I'm having trouble figuring out what market to go after with it. (I know, just shut up and write the thing already).
I don't want to get lost the shuffle of the sheer volume of erotica that is out there. One (non-paying) site I looked at had over 500 new stories posted in the last week. Paying markets in erotica seem like a vast and uncharted sea to me. I don't consume a ton of erotica myself, so my gauge for the quality of a given publisher is severely lacking.
But the romance genre is just so, well, PINK. That section of the bookstore gives me hives. I know that there is money to be made in that genre, but it seems that it has a lot of rules/formulas. Even though what I am writing could be classified as a Romance, I am loathe to go there with it, especially since it is a rather unconventional story.
Any ideas?

Re: Erotica or Romance?
Mon, May 14, 2007 - 5:42 PMJudging from what I've heard from a friend who writes romance (and who recently made her first novel sale), it depends on the individual market. For example, her sale was to Avalon, which is geared more toward hand-holding, never mind kissing. Then there's another romance publisher (whose name I forget offhand) that is looking for hot & steamy material. Another friend of mine has been published in the subgenre of "cop porn," which I'd never heard of before.
So yeah, keep writing, see where the story takes you, and then check out the markets to see where you might have a good fit. And good luck!

Re: Erotica or Romance?
Wed, May 23, 2007 - 10:06 PMIs it like the section in the video store where there's a beaded curtain or saloon door?
Hives, rashes, and pure embarrassment.
Then I just end up feeling dirty. . .

Re: Erotica or Romance?
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 8:52 PMHow long is it? (the book, I mean.) Silhouette has imprints that are technically Romance, but with different kinds of edges: explicit sex, paranormal, etc. I recently scarfed down a Silhouette paranormal called Raintree: Inferno that was fairly explicit without being pornographic, and actually had wit to it! But Silhouette's products are rather short li'l things.
How deep do you go? (oh, stop!) As in, how poetic or literary do you get with the relationship? How directly does the quality of the characters' sexual experience affect their choices and actions beyond the bedroom, and the outer plot that hangs thereon? You might have Literary Fiction.
That's my 2 cents. -

Re: Erotica or Romance?
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 9:01 PMThanks, Joy!
Right now, there is a lot of stuff going on outside the bedroom as well as inside it. The sex is in the context of a relationship between two characters that I am trying to make as nuanced and complex as possible. It is erotic and at times explicit, but I like to think it has a cheeky wit to it.
I'm almost halfway done and it is around 15K words/55pages. So it may end up novella length when it is finished.
Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.
