I FINALLY finished my non-fiction book proposal to by agent's satisfaction. Glory be and hallelujia! Anybody else here doing or ever done a non-fiction book proposal? Was it crazy hard for you? Or is it just me. I swear it would have been easier just to write the book.

Congratulations
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 4:04 AMAt least it's over. No, I haven't done a proposal, but I've had to write novel synopses and they've had me tearing my hair out. I couldn't believe how hard they were, and how little they seemed to say about my book. -

Re: Congratulations
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 6:34 AMYeah, I know about writing novel synopses, too. Nothing like trying to sum up a novel in a page or two. Those are SOOO hard.
The non-fiction proposa is a different hard. It has to have a chapter outline and a few chapters of the book, which wasn't too bad. But then you have to create your "platform" which is essentially a marketing/business plan for the book and includes who you are, why you are the person to write the book, other books that are like yours (ones that have sold well) and how your book is different than them, and how you intend to promote the book. And that is no small part of the deal. It should sound "impressive."
I'm not used to trying to sound impressive, not about myseslf anyway. hahaha. It made me really uncomfortable. But it is done. Now we'll see what happens. It is weird to do all that work and then turn it over to someone else to sell. Cross your fingers.

Re: Zen and the art of the book proposal
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 10:02 PMCongratulations! I've done novel synopses but not nonfiction proposals. A friend of mine entered a contest called, literally, "The Dreaded Synopsis." I do know that publisher specs for those things differ widely. Keeping my fingers crossed that your agent gets you good results!
