    Hi! new here!

current project: fragments of a novel that i want to finish into a novel--finally. i've been in graduate school getting my M.A. in Literature for the last three years and had to put all of my creative writing on hold. i defend my thesis on the 11th of december! yes.

so, now that i have time to myself again i've been pulling out this old novel project. right now i'm revising a small chunk of it into a short story with the plan of publishing it somewhere. if anybody has any suggestions regarding decent, small lit. mags. i'd appreciate them.

    happy writing! work well everybody.

    Hi Stacie,

Newbie, right here. I am developing a fantasy novel, that I started last year around Thanksgiving. I have been looking for an active site where I can bounce ideas and get some much needed help at times. I have written somewhere between four and five hundred pages of this new work, and have a few to go. Right now I'm rewriting some of the more questionable things and plot turns that I had included. Thank you for your introduction and I hope to talk to you, and the other members of this group soon. Writing can be a long dark road, but I am focused on the shining city at the end of the road, instead of the travails to get there.

    Ciao

      Welcome, George!

400 to 500 pages? WOW! What is your novel about?

It's a fantasy novel. It's just something that's been rolling around in my head for a while, and honestly it came pretty easily. I had set a goal to write about 2 - 3 pages a day. So now I have a good sized orange that needs to be peeled and pressed before it can be turned into marmalade. I would say that much of it, I am happy with, but I have already rewritten a great deal of the first nine chapters, and will probably be doing the rewrites for some time yet. As for the story, I posted about a three to four page snippet on Writerscafe.org in the group Project Fantasy. Sorry for making you run to read it, but I didn't see anywhere in this site to post something that size. It's called the Vanguard of Kiracos, if you're interested.

I am really very shy about my writing, but it is something that I really enjoy. Let me know, if you check it out, what you think of it.

        Thx

Am I still considered new? Anyway, I have been writing short stories and fragmented long works for as long as I remember. I haven't been able to do any serious writing since undergrad (about 8 years). I am a scientist by day and a mom/belly dancer/writer by night. Last year I started a fantasy novel and it is still on going. I don't have anything near 500 pages but my modest 200 is fine with me. It isn't over yet! I call this my "draft zero" (I wish I could remember who coined that phrase). Basically this is the version that tells me(the author) what the book is about. It is my rough draft/outline that I will use to make the story into something amazing. Nobody else reads this version, well my daughter read part, but I digress... I am very exicted about this book and hope others will be too. My plans is to take some creative writing courses next year and then get with the campus workshop group. Ok, there are my two cents worth!

Oh I forgot! I have an idea journal that have ideas for two other works too. All fantasy.
By the way, the book I am currently working on may be turning into a trilogy before my very eyes!
Other than that I am reading as much as I can (fantasy books, other genres, and writing as a craft book for ideas and tips!)

      Mindy,

Talk to Elissa about books that turn into series. She knows all about that! :)

      Sounds awesome!

        Heehee...

        George and Mindy, welcome!

Brief history: what is now my Deviations series began as a short story in 1985. Feedback from editors and workshop-mates: powerful writing, fascinating premise, but I needed to provide more info. Enter years of multiple-shift work and other diversions. Roughly 2 decades later I pulled out the story draft and the critiques and *thought* I'd expand it into a novel. At about the 200,000-word mark I realized I was writing a trilogy. After I finished writing the trilogy I realized the characters weren't through with me. I'm currently writing the sixth (and I *think* the final) book in the series.

Deviations: Covenant (volume 1) was recently published by Aisling Press, a small press headquartered in the Tampa suburb of Wesley Chapel. I've been told to expect the contract for volume 2 by the end of the year. More info is at:

        home.earthlink.net/~emalcoh...ions.html

George, I know what you mean about the 500 pages. My fourth volume is up over 500 pages (roughly 151K words) , so I might need to break it into two books. My other volumes are in the mid-80Ks except for #3, which weighs in at around 115K.

Book #6 recently crossed the 50K mark and still has quite a way to go.

Mindy, I write my drafts the same way and make scads of notes, much of which never make it into the draft. They're a combination of trial balloons, outlines, research notes, and me arguing with myself.

Publishing news: I recently learned that my story "Identity Theft" is forthcoming in The Drabbler #10 (Sam's Dot Publishing) in February. (A "drabble" is a very short story of *exactly* 100 words. The theme for this issue is "Haunted Spaceports.") Other short fiction forthcoming include "Hermit Crabs" in Electric Velocipede #14 (Spring 2008) and "Arachne" in Riffing on Strings: Creative Writing Inspired by String Theory (Scriblerus Press, June 2008. "Arachne" originally appeared in Aboriginal Science Fiction, Nov/Dec 1988.) My cinquain sequence "Evolution" is due out in the Nov/Dec Star*Line along with my cover illo. My article "The Many Shades of Dark Poetry" just came out in Poets' Forum Magazine 19(2), along with 2 poems of mine and one of my mother's -- my mother's was published posthumously (she literally wrote it on her deathbed in 1982). Poetry is still forthcoming in Asimov's, date TBD. (The contract is still forthcoming, though I've got the acceptance in hand.)

I recently responded to a request-for-revision from one anthology: neither an acceptance nor a rejection, but encouraging! Still keeping my fingers crossed on that one. Another anth. bounced back a story that didn't quite fit their niche, but invited me to submit more -- and the bounced story will go to the next market on my list as soon as my printer cartridges come in. I'm usually more on top of the cartridge situation, but I've been a bit distracted...

Good luck to you all, and keep on keepin' on!

Wow Elissa, congrats to ya on all your success. Its refreshing to hear of your stories and poetry doing what they were meant to do. It's my hope that this story I'm writing will receive the acceptance that yours obviously have. Again congratulations, and continued success to ya (lifts a drink, and cheers!).

I joined a couple months ago so I may not be new exactly, but this is the first time I've offered up my intro this way.

I learned fiction writing via screenwriting for 15 years. In 2004, after the zillionth pass on a script with the comment, "Great Read!" I finally Got The Hint. I finished my first novel (280-ish pages, 80K words) in 2006 and in 2007 it placed second in a national contest. It's being considered by a publisher right now. There are two more books in the character's series (it's a Buddhist/cozy mystery with gay/historical/social issue angles) in outline. A novel based on a piece of flash fiction I wrote 5 years ago is also in outline. But right now I'm working on a collection of short stories that is a "posthumous collaboration" with my grandfather.

Papaw was born in 1895 in rural Indiana, and was a bookish lad on the farm. By the time he was in his 40s, he'd gone through a lot while never losing his great kindness and spiritual heart. He'd always wanted to be a writer (read David Copperfield 3 times before age 12) but didn't get into an English Comp class until his 40s, as a perk of being a WPA employee at Indiana University. I found his class assignment fiction sketches in a box of his letters and papers at my Mom's house. (He died 30 years ago, in 1976.) They were basically memoirs from his life, and family stories that had been told and re-told. Although Papaw never developed his gifts, his perfectly detailed descriptions of places, labors and shocks in his life struck me as being valuable and worth expanding into fully-fleshed short stories. So that's what I'm doing. The first tale "Black Horse Fever," has gone off to a couple of contests and will go off to a couple more this week.

Beyond these projects, there are a couple of screenplays that beg to be novels. A romantic comedy/fantasy, and a historical lesbian romance. And some short stories still nag at me.

I joined the Tribe to get acquainted with other writers, both established and emerging.

    Thanks to all!

    Hello,
I've been a member for quite sometime now, but I haven't posted anything to date. I write childrens books, most of my research was provided by my target audience themselves, when I worked as a nanny while going to school. I'm also in the process of writing a musical with my writing partner of 17 years.

      Hi there,

Stacie, you know me, but I have just joined the tribe today. I'm starting to freelance write as well as get more serious about my own creative work (poetry, fiction, and screenplays). I would love to learn more about the writing world and maybe one day even make a living at writing.

      Pleased to meet you all.

      I'm new.

I'm working on a book that's autobiographical but thinly disguised as fiction. Truth is far stranger than fiction and I've seen my share of "strange". Some of the actual people I've known in my life are far more fantastical than anything I could ever come up with!

I'm new to this tribe. Just recently returned to tribe after a year away.

Currently I've been writing fiction in a local modern setting, kind of an action/intrigue type of thing. I also like to do a bit of journal writing and the occasional erotica. Lastly, I have a back-burner project, a guidebook of Oregon for motorcyclists.

Lately though I've been having some blockage with my fiction work and thought it may help to join a few writing tribes for inspiration.

Alrighty, I've been meaning to reply to this thread since it was first posted because it came up right after I joined this tribe. So with a little bit of guilt, I finally have the time to post.

Hello, my name is Ash. My dream is to be a published author. Right now, in my budding writing career I am focusing on short stories. I currently have three finished and a few more I am working on. The three I have are in submission right now to Glimmer Train, Asimov's, and Analog. So hopefully I will be published soon. I have a B.A. in English with an emphasis in literature and language. I also work as a substitute teacher and Polynesian dancer.

Any advice anyone can give me is greatly appreciated. ^_^

    I am!!!

I'm Max and I'm currently working on short stories. I hope to complete 12 within the next year. The reason I don't write novels is because I leave them for two weeks and then come back and am disinterested in them and don't really car. But S.S I can draft in a night or two so its so much fun and rewarding.

    Hi everyone,
My names Nigel. I am currently trying to write some short stories. I want to get together about 10-12 and then join them with some kind of story arc running through them.

    What are they about?
Nothing big or clever I'm afraid. Just pulpy, adventure stories about a vigilante in modern day London. I want them to be as dark as turkish coffee and possibly as bitter.

    Hi,
I just joined a couple days ago! I have had these stories rolling around in my head for years and really need to get it all out and on paper....then I'll have room for more junk in my head! LOL!
I'm just starting one story, fantasy and I have been working on a couple of kids books. Writing has been very easy for me, ideas come just fine, words too.
I just end up swamped under life in general and have no time to do it. I have 3 boys, take belly dance classes, home school and I have 22 pets to keep me busy. Plus I work part time at a hotel...lots of ideas there...LOL!
    Glad to be here!
