Having admitted that fiction continued to be written after the 1940s, who are some contemporary writers or specific works that are recommended for somebody who doesn't particularly like historical fiction, sci fi, or fantasy writing?

Re: Recommended contemporary writers
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 5:30 AMMotherless Brooklyn, by Jonathan Lethem
The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy
Midnight's Children, by Salman Rushdie
Just about anything by Margaret Atwood
A Student of Weather, by Elizabeth Hay
Stones From the River, by Ursula Hegi
I've got more, but that's a start. Technically you could call Midnight's Children and Stones From the River historical fiction because they're not set in the decade in which they were written, but I'd still say their style is contemporary. -
